The susceptibility of queens of the red imported fire ant (RIFA), Solenopsis invicta Buren, to the entomopathogenic nematodes Steinernema carpocapsae All and S. scapterisci was evaluated in the laboratory. The infective juveniles (IJs) of both nematode species were able to infect the RIFA queens. The proportion of dead queen ants (PDQA) exposed to 10(2) and 10(4) Us of both nematodes were from 0-8% to 46-77% after 2 days, from 23-31% to 77-92% after 3 days, from 62-69% to 100% after 6 days, and from 69-77% to 100% after 9 days, respectively. The results indicate that after 4 days of treatment PDQAs of the two nematodes were similar for the same dose (10(2) or 10(4) IJs). The higher dose of the nematodes (10(4) IJs) caused significantly higher PDQAs than the lower dose. The PDQA of each treatment except control after 6 days was significantly higher than after 3 days, but was not significantly different after 9 days. These results show the potential for control of newly-mated fire ant queens by S. carpocapsae All and S. scapterisci nematodes. |
